They will close the Post Office that protests the least.

The participation of Adam Price MP and Councillor Williams in the Brechfa 'Save the Post Office' public meeting was impressive. But not as impressive as the high turn out by the local impassioned community who rightly feel that a crucial service is being robbed from the area.

With standing room only by the appointed start time, people continued to squeeze into every available space as Non Williams and Denise Sparks, representing the Post Office, tried to explain how the decision had been made to threaten 25 of Carmarthen's post offices with closure.

Calls for accountability and transparency of the statistics used to justify these closures fell on deaf ears, as did pleas to reconsider put forward by a cross section of the audience:

  • from a ten year old boy concerned about his future in growing up in a village that has its life line severed

  • small businesses stating clearly that they would not be able to operate without a post office

  • conservationists pointing out that a 26 mile round journey to post a parcel would conflict with government requests to cut unnecessary mileage
  • the elderly and vulnerable - losing a simple link to the outside world

  • the community shop - which will lose a large part of its passing trade as people are forced to commute to the bigger towns

The message from the post office was clear - they felt it was out of their hands, they have been told by the government to close 2500 post offices - and the feeling from the meeting was they will close the Post Offices who protest the least.

Sadly - this means that our protest if successful with conclude with the closure of another post office, which in turn will affect another community. It is a difficult position to find ourselves yet we must fight on.

Please send off your letters if you have not done so already - make your voice heard and battle on for our Post Office.
